How do you keep bees?

When I started keeping bees, I thought how crazy the idea was for SOBs (Stack of Boxes). Working them moving them, all very labor intensive. How many 50 to 75 Lb boxes of bees and honey can you move in a day?

That lead to my “lazy side” coming out and figuring that there must be a better way to keep bees. Having been trained with big industry a philosophy called 5S Protocol or Kaizen way where you look to simplify and make better that which you are doing along with the environment that surrounds you.

I work bees with my Mentor Dr Carl Jurica, he is a wonder to watch. Seeing his passion for bees, his love of the craft and everything that surrounds it alot of it rubbing off onto me. Only exception was “working the bees” Heavy lifting, not my style.

That lead me to researching in depth the subjects of hives. Skeps, Boxes of different shape and sizes and ideas from other cultures all related to keeping bees. All were basically the same, hives outside, as a shelter for bees that the beekeeper manipulates to achieve his goal of making honey or raising bees. There was one exception, the Slovenian Style of beekeeping.

Inside my “Hive Hut”with by best buddy where I make make bees better.

Each of the doors you see are and individual Americana Hive, heach box can house three queen rite hives. They are good for rearing queens as they are easier to work with than the heavy SOBs.

Simplifying the idea of keeping bees, having the process equipment right there next to the hives. Having the everything you need to keep bees and process honey all there, under one roof.

The 2021 season is heading for the half way point. I am as you can see, getting my bees ready for winter. Just a matter of getting out of that comfortable chair and “git’n r dun”

ooops, too late ZZZZZzz ZZ zzzz ZZzzzz

A Swarm Catch Method

In this video, Dr. Carl is attempting to stop or catch a pending swarm. You can see the bees are out and ready to go. at the end, it is just a prelude to the queens departure. The swarm didn’t fly it just went back inside the hive. As you watch, as Carl explains it, if you are lucky you may be able see and capture the queen as she leaves the hive. Capturing the queen allows you the control of the swarms resting place, where ever the Queen is.

Setting the Hive House

So the resting place for the first ever 20 hive building made exclusively to improve the environment that bees and beekeepers need to thrive. To me beekeepers up here in the north missout on so much at the beginning of the year, start working bees in March, not April or May. It is so much easier to work indoors sitting down when doing this kind of work. Keeping bees should bee easy.

The Americana Hiving System is influenced by the Slovenians Style Hive and Beekeeping Methods.

Beekeeping, a fascinating subject that has been studied since man could think, I would argue one of the many first experiments with other life forms in the earths environment. An experiment that continues on to the minutes you read this.  My hope here is that you will see the simple benefit of helping a seemingly small creature.  A creature that does for the environment, a space shared by all, man and beast alike, the environments we share, made more  beautiful and plentiful, large in part only, because of the honey bee.

The modern American Beekeeping Industry has been running primarily with the Langstroff system of beekeeping since the 1800s.  Over the last 30+ or so years new threats to bees have taken root.  What has changed that is allowing this to happen and how can it be corrected? The experts in bees and big Pharma have been looking at the serious issue of the Varroa destructor mite. As they see it in the “Langstroff light” they are looking to correct it within that paradigm.  Work with what you have, work with what you are used to knowing what works, correct the issues and problems within that mind set.  But from what I am reading and learning about bees and varroa, I must wonder if maybe the answer isn’t so much an external chemical corrective approach to exterminate the mites as much as it could be more an internal environmental condition approach with regard to how the bees living area is the possible cause.

Many solid business platforms have been supported caring for this omni important life form.  Properly administered time tested practices that span mankind’s known records in keeping bees still used today in other parts of the world, are there to be capitalized on for those with the vision.  Practices not familiar to American beekeepers need to be brought out here to America to help keep our American bees better, alive and healthy!
